Part two in our dealing with procrastination series
Sometimes the best way to deal with procrastination is to ‘just do it’. My default behaviour is to avoid, delay and make excuses. Although I’ve often found the advice to ‘just do it’ a little harsh, I find that when I do that it usually benefits me.
I would like to add a caveat here that this still very much a work in progress for me. I feel that I am inherently lazy and don’t have either the willpower or what it takes to be a success. Probably a couple of limiting beliefs there to work on.
Having said all that my default behaviour is changing. In the past when I’ve felt low or tired, I’ve made an excuse to sit on the sofa and watch TV rather than do what needs to be done. There are occasions when this is the right thing to do, although in my experience a great way to shift your state is to take action.
It might be that you do a BANJO or Eat that Frog as we covered in my previous blog post. On the other hand, if you are feeling delicate sometimes it’s good to start slowly, with some easy tasks to get you in the flow.
I took a day off work today. My friend Tamara is visiting from Australia tomorrow and coming on my radio show. I took the day off so I could prepare my show early and spend as much time with Tamara as possible. I also had a few other things I wanted to do.
When I woke up, I did not feel like doing anything except sit on the sofa, watching TV and eating biscuits. I knew this would result in me feeling worse, so I looked at my to do list and started off with a few easy jobs. I listened to a Kate Northrup audio, which shifted my mind state. There are a number of things you can do to shift your state.* I find listening to something uplifting such as an audio book or a YouTube video a great way to do this.
I cooked and ate a healthy breakfast. Now I find myself feeling much better and in the right frame of mind to write this blog post.
