Mindfulness

Mindfulness

I have found Mindfulness to be a particularly helpful tool to overcome negativity and depression. It’s easy to go down a negative path. When I catch myself doing this there are three things I do to stop myself heading into a harmful spiral of self-destruction.

1.  Self-awareness

When I catch myself heading down that negative path, I notice and take a step back. As Eckhart Tolle, author of the Power of Now would say, I become the observer of my mind. I believe that self-awareness is the first step to change. In fact, once you’ve mastered it, you’re more than half-way to victory.

2. Feel the feelings

If I’m feeling low or depressed I allow myself to really feel the feelings. I focus on the feelings and the sensations in my body. It’s important to note that feeling the feelings is different to getting caught up in negative thoughts.

3. Mindfulness

I take myself out of my head and into my body and really focus on whatever it is I’m doing. For example, if I’m in the shower I focus on how the water feels on my skin and the smell of the soap. It can also be beneficial to change your state by making a cup of tea or going for a walk.

Once I’ve taken these steps I may also use other techniques such as affirmations to change my state.

This tool is so simple and easy to use that it’s easy to think it won’t work. In my experience though, Mindfulness is one of the best tools I’ve found for overcoming depression and negativity.
