A great way to get what you want is to set and achieve goals. To achieve your goals, they should be CSMART.
C – challenging
S – specific
M – measurable
A – achievable
R – rewarding
T – time-bound
If you want to move forward, your goals should be challenging, even if it’s only a slight improvement on where you are now. For example, if you are currently meditating for five minutes a day to continue to meditate for five minutes a day will not move you forward. Meditating for ten minutes, or even six minutes, a day will move you forward.
Goals should be specific and not too vague. I want to meditate is vague, whereas, I want to meditate for ten minutes per day is specific.
How will you know when you’ve achieved your goal? Where will you be? How will you feel? What will you see?
It’s important to get the balance between challenging and achievable goals. Goals must be achievable otherwise they will be demotivating, which rather defeats the object. If you’re currently meditating for five minutes a day, setting a goal to meditate for an hour every day would be challenging. It would also probably be unachievable.
You can add an extra incentive by giving yourself a little treat when you’ve achieved your goal. You could even tie in the reward with the goal. If you meditate for ten minutes every day for a month you could buy yourself a book on meditation, some incense or a Tibetan singing bowl.
Set a specific time to achieve your goal. You could set yourself a goal to meditate for ten minutes every day when you get out of bed.
Increase your confidence and commitment
To increase the likelihood of achieving your goals, ask yourself the following questions:
- How confident am I that I can achieve this goal?
- How committed am I to achieving this goal?
- What can I do to increase my confidence and commitment?
Things you can do to increase your confidence and commitment include having an accountability buddy, putting time aside in your diary and employing a coach.
